Isaac & Abraham

Many ask why would God ask Abraham to sacrifice his son.
Did G-D ever ask Abraham to slay Isaac?  

Lets start with a question from Isaac: 
Genesis 22:7
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

The Story is that God tested Abraham by telling him to take his only son, go forth and make a burnt offering unto our Father (Gen.22:1-2).

Gen:22:5
And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

(Can you spot Abraham's faith? Faith - substance of things hoped for Evidence of things unseen- Heb.11:1)

As they went up Isaac noticed there seemed to be one thing lacking in order to make the offering (Gen.22:7). After Isaac asked where is the lamb Abraham responded:

Genesis 22:8
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering : so they went both of them together. (John 1:29,36)

Notice this statement didnt condemn Isaac, but rather showed faith in God regardless of what the situation seemed to be presenting. The words were prophetic. Abraham didnt allow earthly concerns to get in the way of his trust in YHVH. Abraham didnt lean unto his own understanding but rather seeked to embrace the Holy Spirit, and was an instrument of The Spirit Of Truth when he responded to Isaac. Abraham knew God is just, and that obedience to God is always right. 

 

Gen.22:9-18 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Physical Relation 

Isaac / Ishmael

El Shaddai promises Abram will have seed (Gen.15:4) in which would inherite his blessings. In Gen.16 we have the carnal plan for children of Abram. This plan included Sari's handmaid (an Egytptian) Hagar to bare a child of Abram. She gave birth to Ishmael.

Ishmael was a wild man, his hand against every man and every man's hand against him (Gen.16:12). (Far from being a light unto the nations).

Afterwards The LORD made a covenant with Abram thus changing his name (Gen.17:2) and was told YHVH would multiply his seed exceedingly.Abram's name was changed to Abraham which means Father of Many Nations. (Shem/ Names carry with it character)

Gen.17:7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee (Abraham not Abramand thy seed after thee (Abraham) in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

Gen.17:9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee (Abraham) in their generations.

Note: Ishmael was son of Abram (not Abraham) and Hagar not Gen.16:16/ Name changed later Gen.17:5/ Isaac born in chapter 21, and those after Abraham could only be of one born of Abraham. The calling, role of, blessing of, inheritance of Isaac was never relative to Ishmael. Weight of inheritance is to naturally go to the first born but G-d was clear that the Covenant (and light unto the nations) would go through the child of Abraham and Sarah. MALE (Abram was Ishmaels father /by Hagar the Egyptian/ later called Abraham who had Isaac /by Sarah) 

Gen.17:10-12

This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

Gen.17:20-21

And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

Ishmael was 13 (Gen.17:25) when circumsized not 8 days old as Isaac was! 

Sarah had Abraham send Ishmael away thus making Ishmael unable to take on the weight of the inheritance of Abraham

Gen.21:10

Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman (Ishmael) shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac

Gen.21:12

And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. / FEMALE 

.... It was never God's will that Isaac be killed.

If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot ( Gentiles ) have been grafted in among the others ( branches of Israel that were broken off ) and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root ( Israel ) do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.

What branches that were broken off Paul meant?
Answer: The majority of tribes in Israel.They were almost all gone from the face of earth but God not totally destroyed them all ( Amos 9:8).In fact,Jerusalem wondered if where her children ( chosen who are like Isaac already ) come from,for She knows that they are all gone ( scattered and majority died by swords,famine,sickness etc ) .

Proof: Isaiah 49:21 Then you ( Jerusalem ) will say in your heart,
‘Who bore me these?( her children who are like Isaac from nations )
I was bereaved and barren;
I was exiled and rejected.
Who brought these ( her children ) up?
I was left all alone,
but these ( her children ) —where have they ( her children who are like Isaac )come from?"

Not let us make clear if who are these children mentioned by Jerusalem ( who once become in bondage but now she is free ) .Her children are those who are like Isaac already,free from bondage of sin ) .
Let us read from Paul : Galatians 4:28 Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.

And the mother of these like Isaac according to Paul:Galatians 4:26-

But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and SHE IS OUR MOTHER For it is written:
“Be glad, barren woman,
you who never bore a child;
shout for joy and cry aloud,
you who were never in labor;
because more are the children of the desolate woman
than of her who has a husband.”

NOW JERUSALEM THE MOTHER OF THOSE WHO ARE LIKE ISAAC WONDERED IF WHERE HER CHILDREN COME FROM,FOR SHE KNOWS THAT THEY ARE ALL GONE ( but God not totally destroyed them all ) .BUT HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT HER CHILDREN WIL COME FROM EAST,WEST,NORTH AND SOUTH WHEN THEY WERE ALL GONE?

Read about the children of Jerusalem if where they come from:
Isaiah 49:11-12 I ( God ) will turn all my mountains into roads,
and my highways will be raised up.
See, they ( Children of Jerusalem who are like Isaac ) will come from afar —
some from the north, some from the west,
some from the region of Aswan.”

Muslims assert a claim that Abraham came to mecca and helped Ishmael build the kabba. They attempt to use the term baca in the bible to support this :D. The bible does mention "Baca" (Ps.84:6) -"Who passing through the valley of Baca (of weeping) make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools" The term is Hebrew #1056! -From H1058; weeping; Baca, a valley in *"Palestine": - Baca..... You also have bochim (the plural) Judges 2:1,*5 And they called the name of that place Bochim (#1066): and they sacrificed there unto the Lord #1066- Plural active participle of H1058; (with the article) the weepers; Bokim, a place in Palestine: - Bochim.... The common root #1058 - A primitive root; to weep; generally to bemoan: - X at all, bewail, complain, make lamentation, X more, mourn, X sore, X with tears, weep.
..... No reason to suggest bacca is mecca!

Abraham received the *mark of the covenant (phy circumcision) After entering into the covenant with HaShem. This phy seed was to carry this phy. mark as by the letter of the law. The people of the nations are required to receive circumcision of the heart but not biblically required to be physically circumcised. Eze.44 is not relative to requirements of salvation upon the nations rather it gives standards that were to be met before one could approach the temple mount. Flesh doesnt inherite the kingdom regardless if its missing a foreskin. Acts 15 covers the subject at the mouth of apostles of Christ as well as Gal.2:1-3; 5:1-11; 6:11-16. 1 Cor.7:17-20, Col.2:11-12, Phil.3:3. The knowledgeable physical seed of Abraham is commanded to observe these things throughout their generations and carry the letter of the law forward. (Neither the "religions" of Judaism or Christianity require people of the nations  in covenant with G-d  (Noahides/ Christians) to be phy. circumcised. However many health benefits are associated with phy circumcision and places like the usa is general medical practice to be circumcised following birth which means there are alot of people having it done regardless of their religion (and not on the 8th day btw).

Tanakh (OT according to Hebrew text)

Gen.22:2 And He said, "Please take your son, your only one, whom you love, yea, Isaac, and go away to the land of Moriah and bring him up there for a burnt offering on one of the mountains, of which I will tell you."

 (Rashi- "bring him up": He did not say to him, “Slaughter him,” because the Holy One, blessed be He, did not wish him to slaughter him but to bring him up to the mountain, to prepare him for a burnt offering, and as soon as he brought him up [to the mountain], He said to him, “Take him down.” - [from Gen. Rabbah 56:8])

Gen.22:2 (kjv/ Modern English translation:) And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

Offer-alah

A primitive root; to ascend, intransitively (be high) or active (mount); used in a great variety of senses, primary and secondary, literally and figuratively: - arise (up). (cause to) ascend up, at once, break [the day] (up), bring (up), (cause to) burn, carry up, cast up, + shew, climb (up), (cause to, make to) come (up), cut off, dawn, depart, exalt, excel, fall, fetch up, get up, (make to) go (away, up), grow (over), increase, lay, leap, levy, lift (self) up, light, [make] up, X mention, mount up, offer, make to pay, + perfect, prefer, put (on), raise, recover, restore, (make to) rise (up), scale, set (up), shoot forth (up), (begin to) spring (up), stir up, take away (up), work.

Abraham received revelations through visions ("Num.12"), as well as with the Angel of the Lord. I believe the act of taking Isaac up the mount and making a burnt offering unto The LORD was literally faith in action and not a dream. 

In scripture I don't see G-D literally telling Abraham to Kill/slay Isaac in any way (however that could be suggestive). Its an  assumption (interpretation) in that he did tell Abraham to take Isaac up the mount and make a burnt offering (which would include death of such an offering) unto The LORD. (Which is what took place fulfilling the deed)

Gen.22:2 (kjv) And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and "offer (alah) him" there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. The "him" isnt in the Hebrew texts here.

The Tanakh reads: Gen.22:2 "And He said, "Please take your son, your only one, whom you love, yea, Isaac, and go away to the land of Moriah andbring him up there for a burnt offering on one of the mountains, of which I will tell you."

 

The way it was worded in The Word allowed for Abraham to ascend the mountain and make a burnt offering. The  faith of Abraham was amazing throughout the story!

1) Before Abraham ever even ascended the mount he told those there that both he and his son (Isaac) were going up the mount and both he and his son were coming back down. This didnt allow for Isaac to be made a sacrifice. Gen:22:5 
And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship(make a burnt offering) , and come again to you.

Abraham did this again ... 

2) as he ascended the mount! Isaac asked where is the sacrifice. Abraham didnt say Your IT Son, No instead out of faith he again spoke in a way that allowed for Isaac to not be made the sacrifice. 

Gen.22:8

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering : so they went both of them together. (Jn.1:29,36).

(...(xtra) The story line ("a certain midrash reported by Thomas Mann") posted in the original post (o.p) - "Elohim would identify Himself thus: I am Molech, bull-king of the baalites and command you..." This doesnt sound like the shem of HaShem. Its very deceptive and is a lie. I can't believe this is anything more than words of man (and we see no clue of this in the written Torah). This source ""Joseph and his Brothers" was published in "1943" and under the genre of "fiction". I agree G-D is Not "Molech bull-king of the baalites" but i don't think we need this modern source to know this! Also do we serve a G-D that would identify himself as something he isnt? Would he do anything that even for a moment would encourage us to follow after an idol? Does He make a command that he later dares us to follow then make that prior command out to be a joke? I think not. Ben Masada what do you think of this story line you presented to us? Do You take it seriously?  To each his own, Just interested.)

Isaac was the raised up son of Abraham!

Zec.12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. (*1 Cor.5:6,7,8)
