My question comes from Mark 9-- Jesusu is exorcising a demon from a posessed boy, who has been tormented. It seems the Deciples are not able to do the exercising, Jesus replies-- these need prayer and fasting.

I do not understand what this means? Can anyone help me to understand this?

28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer

I believe Christ was stressing the importance of us embracing the many membered body with our faith.

Mark 9:19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

Lk.10:17-24
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

And we know that faith without works is dead. Discipline goes a long way, for it shows our reverance to The LORD.
Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
Mark 9:23
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
Mark 10:27
And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
Mark 14:36
And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

We know all Credit, Glory, Power and praise be to Our Lord (Rev.4:11)
Fasting is a form of discipline. And when we are wlaking in The Spirit who can be against us??? Heb.5-6 speaks about how we are to move unto perfection and to keep growing After that we have partaken of the gift of Grace (Salvation).

We have a few examples I would like to raise up. Christ is the Living Word and all things are subject to it! Every knee will bow. When this Word comes forth we as members of the flock have been known to fall to our faces in his glory. Rev.1:18-20 for he is the Key! (Rev.3:7)

Eph.6:10-19
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

1 Cor.6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Notice the boy had had this spirit since he was but a chil Mk.9:21 which would be like unto saying its almost all he knew was to have such a spirit. And therefore only The Holy Spirit would be able to drive it out (not a spirit that had blemish).
sometimes we may say if you are full of the Holy Spirit you leave no room for a foul one.

In Dan. 10 Daniel had just seen a vision, He went through a period of Fasting, and Prayer! God's attention was on Daniel and Gaberial was sent unto him with the assistance of Michael! Daniel had times where he would fall down with his face to the ground as the Word came to him. He had times when he had little strength and times when he was strengthened through the many membered body of The Kingdom. (Dan.10:12 (chasten thyself))

Mk 9:18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
Everytime the Apostels did work signs they gave all the credit to The Lord in Christs name! (Rom.13:7

Mk.9:23 all things are possible to him that BELIEVETH.

Mk.9:25 the unclean spirit was commanded by The Word of the LORD (Yeshua).

Prayer and fasting is to devote your whole being unto the LORD Spirit and body. This is The temple that the enemy has no power over!

Acts 10 Cornelius's prayers went up to the LORD and he was visited! We see the many membered body at work here. He was told to go to see Simon Peter. When he went to see Peter We are given a important lesson that we are not to call no man common when it comes to status within believers, for we are all one(Acts.10:45). (Spiritual Israel Gal.3:24-29)

Acts 10:38 (vs 13-17)
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Chist is our example. He came not to do the will of his flesh but rather the will of Our Father for he was to be known as Emmanuel!

It will look to return to this tread to perhaps document more examples of the Many membered Body at Work and total devotion to the Holy Spirit! I encourage others to do the same!!!

Hi there. New here. It seems to me that kind are not in control of their ability to obey the command. It is like they are being told to lift a car or exit a stuck elevator. They simply are not able to comply. Therefore God's power directly intervening rather than simply obeying the authority given to us is required to cause/enable them to exit. This is just supposition on my part.

Prayer and fasting are the sustained disciplines of both the mind and body in tandem. But is this the prayer and fasting of the one in need of healing/exorcism? No it is the sustained discipline of the one exercising the authority, an exercise in discipline elevating that one to a higher level of communion with Father for this express purpose.

Prayer is something always done in exercising devils.  But sometimes personal affliction is needed and that is what fasting is all about.

go here scroll down to Oct 9th's blog on Biblical Fasting.  http://chettesblog.wordpress.com/topical-teaching/

Also Elmer Towns has a great book out called "Fasting for a Miracle" it has a great study on the different types of prayers as well.
