Where do you draw the line when it comes to music you find appropriate ? I know each generation seems to embrace differ styles of music than the previous and that with age also come differ taste.i listen to many types of music. I often make mixs where I take out false doctorines in songs I like and make many songs say much more truth than they orginaly did! I often even catch myself singing a tune and changing the lyrics on purpose to fit my faith. I think it is good to make a library of songs of Praise that line up with truth. Personaly I like music with lyrics that have much truth in it and cause one to think, but I wont say that all things I listen to consist of only truth or good. That would be ignorance on my part and set me up to be a failure. ____________________________________________________

————————-

Those led by the spirit have a gift of discernment (open eyes to recognize weather something be good or bad (fruitful or unfruitful (fruit inspector). Spiritual Discerment should be embraced with all things a Christian comes across weather it be music, books, media....so on........
There are a number of "contemporary gosple" songs that relay a unscriptural message in the name of Christ! There are false teachers. Just cause something claims to be Christian doesnt mean it is. And back to discernment, discernment even allows one to learn and grow from bad things around them!

Romans 16:19
For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

1 Thessalonians 5: 11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

Romans 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

1 Corinthians 10:23-24 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
(be not selfish and of your own conciet but rather treat others with the same respect and concern as you have of yourself)

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

1 Timothy 1:4-6 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

2 Corinthians 12:19 Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.

One problem I notice among those who claim to be Christian is that they often believe their is only one Christian tactic. When it comes to music of praise many of the so called gospel songs all sound alike and even sound like a lullaby and this is only one mood in which often times lacks enery and puts many to sleep.
It is true that we are not to condemn anyone as to say they are hopeless of salvation that is not our job and is even the opposite of what we are called to do. Love (concern) is the number one virtue and tactic of A Christian and it is to be used with all the others! It is impossible to hate anyone if you are concerned about everyone and would like to see them all grow closer to YHVH. Many Christians and non Christians would rather have us play doormates of tolerance. But the fact is the Word tells us how to use such tactics as Spiritual Discernment (not the same as judgement- you can forgive one but hat doesnt mean you have to surround yourself with them), Rebuke, Patience,...Again all these are done with Love!

Colossians 4:6
Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

We are asked to go unto the ethnos (the nations) and share the good news. In doing this we need to relate to them. The disciples knew the values of this. (Christians unlike Muslims are fishers of men)

In Acts 17 (:16-34) Paul went among a people who worshiped idols (gods)! They even had a alter to "THE UNKNOWN GOD" Paul used this to bring Many to Christ! He used this symbology that they had embraced to tell them of THE GOD they knew not!!!!

I for one grew up in the inner city. There Hip hop reaches most all the younger generation. In the inner city it is considered a culture and a way of life. It is the voice of the struggle!

Whatever is the voice within ones life (trials and tribulations) it is that which they put in their music. So those in the inner city that are being drawn to God will reflect that in their music. Many who claim to be Christian would rather silence that voice. Those same people know not how to reach out to those same people! We are to reach out to all people and differ people have differ gifts.

Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals!

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Psalm 149:1-9 Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly! Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre! For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds............

Hi La brock . I am very versatile when it comes to music also. But I attended my mom's church on mother's day and was really put off by the loud almost heavy metal music they played. They are in the process of trying to update their image in an attempt to bring in new, younger members so they have started including newer music in their service and projecting the lyrics onto a large screen. I just looked around in amazement as these older people were staring at the screen, struggling to sing these lyrics with this loud noise blaring in the background. You could not even hear the voices, the music was so overpowering. I leaned over and yelled into my sister's ear " I bet God is sitting there in Heaven with His hands over His ears right now" . As I said, I am fairly versatile but I have my limits There was nothing reverant or sacred about that music..the message in the lyrics was totally lost because of the noise. I felt like I was in a mosh pit at some concert. Ha ha
Maybe you could have talked to the worship leader, and let them know your thoughts. I am in the process of starting a simular program. I would welcome all feedback.

I used to go to a church with "modern" worship music, and to be honest, it's not that worshipful. I don't categorically dismiss it-in fact, I actually think one of the songs that's singled out for mockery, Good, Good Father, is pretty good-but to me it's very man-centered and seems to be aping de-sacralized music. The church I go to now sings from the old hymns, e.g. Julia Johnston, Philip P. Bliss, Charles Wesley, and psalms. There really is a huge difference, IMO. These songs stir your soul when you ponder the lyrics.

:), Yeah sounds like I would have felt the same way. I imagine you weren't alone in that way of thinking. Honestly when in his Word I like comforting humble music. Sometimes i play pan flute instrumentals when studing.
Just thought I would add this vid to encourage more discussion matter on the subject

i still say with everything we hear we are to use discernment from truth and falsehoods and negativity and positivity! I have come across many hip hop songs that mention scriptures and truths and many in the life style are very interested in truth! Whomsoever will! and let us encourage sowing seed in any area there is interest.

Hi Labrock, Thanks for letting me in- Yaaah!!!

I thought i as the only one who audits songs for truth of content. Years ago 2 of my sisters and I sang together and we liked Jimmy Swaggart songs. He had this song with a line that said " I will praise you Lord this promise I make, AND WHEN ETERNITY ENDS AND START ALL OVER AGAIN, even then I will praise you Lord" It was a nice song but we just couldnt bring ourselves to sing that.
Except for heavy metal, i like all types of music as long as it is not too loud. Too loud is unhealthy for the hearing.
