Spirit of Slumber

Romans 11:8 (Rom.11:5-7)
(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

Slumber - #G2659
κατάνυξις / katanuxis / kat-an'-oox-is \

From G2660; a prickling (sensation, as of the limbs asleep), that is, (by implication [perhaps by some confusion with G3506 or even with G3571]) stupor (lethargy): - slumber.

/Lack of circulation needed- stupor compares to ignorance or "stupidity" which is a lack of understanding/

People receive the spirit of slumber by good reason. First off, we know not to blame God for burdens and that there are harsh effects for such- Jer.23:39-40.

"God hath given them the spirit of slumber"

This is due to cause an effect. God is just.

Rom.11:8 should be compared to ☧ Is. 29:10. The reason for this slumber is by having a rebellious heart - Is.29:13-15 /

Romans 1:28
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 2 Corinthians 13:5

Deuteronomy 29:3-4

4Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
Titus 1:16
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. (Deuteronomy 29:3-4)
Such souls seek that which is not of God. (seek and ye shall find). They have no love of the truth. If given the truth they will only transgress it cause they have other aims and intentions that they (currently) serve.

- 2 Thess.2:10-12

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom, which matures into a ongoing relationship of Love. However many have yet to reach "the beginning".

Jeremiah 5:21-23

21Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:

22Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

23But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

KNOWING BETTER

2 Peter 2:21
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. * Luke 12:47-48/ Luke 10:2-16 (vs.12)/ * Matt.11:24

God knowing our hearts (Spirits). Those who seek to stray from God lack understanding. These same people would be in much more danger to have the many layers of truth revealed to them and to remain a reprobate (rebellious). How shall the hard headed ever learn? (many learn things the Hard way). Some aren't ready or interested in spiritual growth. Some people, you can't tell em anything (Proverbs 12:15) Interest is something that messengers look for (try to spark) before casting pearls this is why they are given the title fishers of men! The sinners that would gather around Yahshua had this interest in the living Word.

Luke 8:10
And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.Matt.13:11-17

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Hebrews 10:22-24 (King James Version)
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Ecc. 2:26 / 2 Peter 3:9 / 2 Cor.7:9

Self Justification

Man tends to self justify (rationalize) things within his own mind. This opens people up to deception.

Prov.14:16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

Prov.1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

(Rev.3:15-17/ 1 Cor.3:18-23/ Matt.12:25-30/ 1 Jn.1:9)

Proverbs 3:1-5

1My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

2For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

3Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

4So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

So basically, man recieves the spirit of slumber as an effect of having a rebellious heart. Pharaoh's heart was hardened, as to say that he would not embrace the signs and works of God. However Pharaoh had many gods and many saw themselves equal to the gods and "holier than thou". This type of rebellious spirit (heart) towards God would lead to failure to see and understand things to a great extent. God's will be done

God is no respector of persons. Anyone who doesn't embrace God according to Praise and above all things will lack understanding no matter how much knowledge they think they have!

Rev. 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (God is warning the church of Ephesus to repent and be about God's buisness or he will remove their candelstick. They would not be suitable to bring forth the light.)

Keep oil in your lamps. We are to be a spiritual people (fed your spirit more than your flesh).

According to both 1 Kings 22:22-3 and 2 Chronicles 18:21-2, G-d deliberately sent a ‘spirit’ to lead Ahab astray

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. 12:20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy. 22:24-25 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. 12:23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness. 15:14 The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.
17:3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts

Deut.31:18 (KJV) "And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods" According to the Hebrew, Even the concept that he is hidden is concealed.

Isa 66:3-5
He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.

Is.66:4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

A really good study, I really enjoyed and it gave me clarification on some questions that I had about those who are in the slumber. Thank you!!

Is.6:9-10 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
